Custom metal wall art usually starts with a piece you already know. Here is how a commission works, how long it takes, and what helps.
Most custom metal wall art we make does not start from a blank page. It starts from a piece you already know — one you saw at a show, one on the site, one a friend has. A little larger. Some different colors. A circle where a square was. Then we make it yours.
That back and forth is the job. We expect it. You should too. Here is how it usually goes.
How a commission usually works
Where do we start?
Send the piece you have in mind and the wall it is for. A photo of the room helps more than a mood board. Measurements help more than adjectives. If you do not have a starting piece, we can point you at a few — but the fastest path is still “this, but…”
How long does it take?
A few weeks to several months, depending on the season. Show season, finish queues, and how many changes we work through all move the date. We will give you an honest window once we know the piece. We will not promise a weekend turnaround on a large steel work.
How much back and forth should I expect?
Some. Scale, color, and shape are the usual three. We would rather trade a few notes up front than finish a piece that is almost right. If you go quiet, the calendar slips. If we go quiet, nudge us.
What should I send you?
- The starting piece — a link from the shop or a photo from a show
- Wall width and height, and what sits near it
- A photo of the room in daylight, not just the empty wall
- Colors you live with — sofa, rug, paint — even if you want the piece to contrast
- When you need it, and whether that date is a wish or a hard event
A few more tips
- One change is easy to talk through. Five at once is how a piece loses its voice.
- If you are between two sizes, tell us both. We can say which one will actually hold the wall.
- Finish and color look different in a hallway than in a photo. We will talk through that.
- We are often on the road. If you write during a show weekend, give us a few days to answer well.
